
# The Immortal Conquerer of Death

You can try to kill him, but he will shrug it off; you can attempt to exile him far far away, but he will effortlessly return! The fears of mortals do not reside in his mind for he has transcended all. Ulamog knows the Path to Exile and the Ur Dragon fears the Wrath of God but Squee cares not for such paltry things as banishment and death. Planeswalkers come and go, legends begin and end, but Squee is eternal, and when you gaze into the future that you fear most, all that remains is Squee. 

With all of this in mind, here is how to construct a commander deck around the unstoppable Squee, the Immortal.

First and foremost, the goal of any Squee deck should be to produce combos as eternal as he is. If you can create infinite red mana and you have a sacrifice outlet, you can infinitely sacrifice squee and recast him. This allows for infinite death triggers and enter the battlefield (ETB) effects. Cards like Impact Tremors and Witty Roastmaster are ones that can help end the game. If you manage to infinitely cast squee, storm cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-DMR-125" title="Grapeshot" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MH2-142" title="Spreading Insurrection" /> are also good at securing a win.

Here is one example of how this deck might go infinite: if you have <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-CSP-100" title="Thermopod" />, Squee, Skyfire Phoenix, and one of the cards that reduce mana costs like Ruby Medallion or Cloud Key, then you can sacrifice Squee and Skyfire Phoenix to <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-CSP-100" title="Thermopod" /> for two red mana. You can then use that mana to recast Squee which will then resummon the Skyfire Phoenix to the battlefield. You can repeat this process infinitely. Any ETB effect or many cards that benefits from a high storm count will end the game. With <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KLD-192" title="Aetherflux Reservoir" /> in play you could also gain infinite life. With <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-THB-125" title="Anax" listItem="T" /> on the field you would be able to produce infinite mana with the tokens he produces.

In a deck like this, red mana is essential. There may be some ways to create a lot of colorless mana, but sometimes that isn’t enough to recast Squee. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-M21-228" title="Chromatic Orrery" /> is very helpful in solving this problem outright. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FIC-354" title="Relic of Legends" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-GRN-115" title="Runaway Steam-Kin" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KHM-123" title="Birgi, God of Storytelling" /> are all fantastic at continually creating the appropriate mana for recasting Squee.

Beyond that, the deck has some of the most common red draw spells and a modest removal package. There are six board wipes in the deck, two of them are one sided. Since Squee doesn't mind board wipes, it feels right to add more than usual (I personally only run four at most unless it’s a planeswalker deck). Just remember to time your board wipes appropriately and try not to kill your own combo pieces.

Admittedly, the price of this deck might not be 100% worth the power-level. Even with all its potential of going infinite, this deck requires many pieces in place for those combos to work. A deck like this would be very fun to proxy if you aren’t financially able to build it properly. This is a deck meant for casual pods ranging around bracket 2 or 3. Because of its infinite nature it likely would work better in bracket 3 pods but I’ve known higher powered bracket 2 pods that would be fine playing against a deck like this.

## Doran, Besieged by Time

Doran is a wonderful, grumpy old treefolk who asks a very simple question: *what if a disparity in power and toughness mattered?* And then he rewards you handsomely for answering that question correctly. And if it's power is less... all the better.

He reads:
> Each creature spell you cast with toughness greater than its power costs 1 less to cast.
>
> Whenever a creature you control attacks or blocks, it gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the difference between its power and toughness.

At first glance, this looks similar to other cards that let your creatures deal combat damage using toughness instead of power. The important twist is that Doran **adds the difference** rather than swapping stats. That subtle change opens the door to some very silly combat math.

For example, imagine you have <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDC-121" title="Indomitable Ancients" /> on the battlefield. It starts life as a humble 2/10. When it attacks with Doran out, it gets **+8/+8**, turning into a 10/18. Now add <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LCI-176" title="Bedrock Tortoise" />, which lets your creatures assign combat damage equal to their toughness. Suddenly that Ancients is swinging for **18 damage**. That’s the kind of math we like doing here.

The game plan is refreshingly straightforward: flood the board with undercosted, high-toughness creatures, pump them up, and turn them sideways. This deck is cheap, simple, and extremely satisfying when it gets rolling.

## Draw

The card draw could be better, but the deck makes up for it by stapling draw effects onto creatures with chunky toughness. ETB draw creatures do real work here, while flexible spells like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-CLB-52" title="Your Temple Is Under Attack" /> can either refill your hand or save your board in a pinch. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-M21-186" title="Garruk's Uprising" /> pulls double duty by drawing cards *and* giving trample, which this deck desperately wants.

Buffs are simple: cheap spells that dramatically increase toughness are all-stars. ## Trample

Trample is the glue that holds the win condition together. Without it, your giant walls just get politely chump-blocked. Instead of loading the deck with tramplers, trample is treated as a **finisher**. Cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FDN-230" title="Overrun" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-ICE-265" title="Stampede" /> end games, while slower options give opponents a turn cycle to respond—which keeps things interactive and casual.

## Selective Wipes

These board wipes are quietly brutal. Because your creatures tend to have tiny power values, spells like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MKC-65" title="Fell the Mighty" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLST-CMR-48" title="Slaughter the Strong" /> often read as one-sided wraths. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDC-29" title="Tip the Scales" /> can require a bit of math, but it usually breaks in your favor.

## Value

This section is where the deck gets a little weird—in the best way. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FIN-172" title="Ancient Adamantoise" /> can swing, redirect damage, and generate resources. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-VOW-99" title="Catapult Fodder" /> punishes careless opponents. And <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDC-27" title="Jaws of Defeat" /> is an instant value add draining opponents whenever your high-toughness creatures enter the battlefield.

## Creatures

Of course, the creatures are the heart of the deck. The checklist is easy: **Is it cheap? Does it have a big gap between power and toughness?** If yes, it probably belongs here. Doran rewards creative creature choices and leaves plenty of room to pivot into secondary themes later on.

There are many questions intrinsic to the human experience: “Why are we here?” “What happens once we die?” “Is it morally dubious to regularly bribe my friend with dog food to get him to investigate potentially dangerous, active crime scenes?” These are all questions that we as people are confronted with at one time or another in our lives, and although we may never truly find answers to some of these questions within our lifetimes, there is perhaps one universally pondered question that we can attempt to answer today.

“Which card is stronger: <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MAT-173" title="Narset, Enlightened Exile" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TLA-242" title="Sokka, Tenacious Tactician" />?” we ask ourselves late at night as we gaze out the window at a full moon. The moon sighs and gives no reply. But if it were to give a reply, lets take a look at what it would likely say:

## Prowess for all vs. Prowess for some

The fact that Narset gives prowess to every creature while Sokka only gives it to Allies initially seems like a clear win for Narset. This would be true if we didn’t take into account that Sokka 3D prints his own friends. This simple fact allows a Sokka deck to not have a single creature card in the 99. You can, of course, add some of the stronger Ally kindred creatures if you want, but it seems more on theme with this style of card to build without creatures. Narset can, of course, take better advantage of token-producing noncreature spells, but even then, there are a few niche cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-OGW-30" title="Oath of Gideon" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-ZNC-20" title="Retreat to Emeria" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BFZ-53" title="Unified Front" /> that produce Ally tokens. As the moon (the arbiter of truth in all things magic-adjacent), this is a close but clear victory for Sokka.

## Recursion

The most obvious strength Narset has over Sokka is she can double-dip into the graveyard. Even better than that, Narset can recast your opponent’s noncreature spells by simply attacking. The fact that Narset recurs spells for free and Sokka does not is a solid reason to choose Narset over Sokka for your commander.

## Evasion

One of the saddest things that can happen in Magic is when you swing out with your 62/62 creature and someone chump blocks it with a 1/1 token. Although menace isn’t the greatest keyword to have on a creature, it is a highly underrated one. In a go-wide strategy, it can even be devastating. One shouldn’t only rely on menace to get through, but every creature having menace can make or break a combat step. This extra keyword gives another point to Sokka.

## Final considerations

Beyond that which has already been covered, the final difference between Sokka and Narset is that Narset has a slightly better stat line. Four toughness vs. three toughness can be important, and there might be some occasions where the extra toughness is beneficial, but since everything has prowess, that additional toughness isn’t as hard for Sokka to find in his time of need. At most, I’d be willing to give Narset half a point over this tiny detail, but this is only being considered in the name of thoroughness. Thus, the final tally is Sokka overtakes Narset at 2 points to 1½, making him objectively a slightly better commander. ## Codie, Vociferous Codex (Commander)

This WUBRG monstrosity might not initially seem like a threat (it does prevent you from being able to cast permanents after all) but by the time your opponents realize how insidious Codie truly is, it will already be too late.

At the low low price of losing your ability to cast permanent spells, Codie taps to filter 4 generic mana for WUBRG and essentially gives your next instant or sorcery spell cascade. Being a 5 color commander, Codie allows you to run the most heinous instants and sorceries in all of magic. If you want your friends to play with you again, I would recommend shying away from mass land destruction and extra turn spells, however, those could still be acceptable depending on what your pod is ok with and what bracket you aim to build this deck. I personally like brackets 2 and 3.

The simplest way to build around Codie is to have the lower end of your curve involve a lot of ramp, draw, and some removal. There are a plethora of 2, 3, & 4 mana green instants and sorceries that tutor lands to the battlefield. There are also a plethora of removal staples that you can easily cascade into. As far as board wipes go, I would recommend ones that allow you to keep Codie alive like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-DMC-148" title="Duneblast" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-IKO-24" title="Mythos of Snapdax" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDC-115" title="Expel the Interlopers" />. If you want to run snow lands, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-KHM-82" title="Blood on the Snow" /> works as well.

For the low to midrange parts of your curve, any draw spells that create treasures are helpful to ramp into the bigger spells. They also help a lot with mana fixing. Any spells like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-DSC-113" title="Brainstorm" /> that let you put cards from your hand on top of your library are also super handy for choosing what you want to cascade into.

The top end of any Codie deck should be some of the highest cmc spells in magic. Although the ultimatums often don't work well with just WUBRG, if the deck ramps enough, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I personally like putting in my favorites of those like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PIP-220" title="Ruinous Ultimatum" /> and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PIKO-185p" title="Emergent Ultimatum" />. <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-NCC-215" title="Clone Legion" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-MB2-52" title="Worst Fears" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-J25-399" title="Army of the Damned" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-TDM-196" title="Jeskai Revelation" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-RVR-241" title="Revival // Revenge" />, and <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-PLCI-153p" title="Hit the Mother Lode" /> are all solid top end additions too.

Are all these creatures incredible? Haha, no. Are they cheap? Absolutely. This deck thrives on bulk bin monsters that look terrifying when they hit the table. Any high-power creature with trample is an instant include. Think <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-FDN-671" title="Darksteel Colossus" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-BFZ-7" title="Eldrazi Devastator" />.

Creatures that grow themselves—like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-JMP-332" title="Hamletback Goliath" /> or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LRW-174" title="Hearthcage Giant" />—pile on damage fast. And honestly, part of Tannuk's charm is the jank. Cards like <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-LTR-426" title="Oliphaunt" />, <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-ROE-5" title="Hand of Emrakul" />, or <BlogCardLink cardId="MTG-M3C-37" title="Twins of Discord" /> might not be perfect—but if you've got them lying around, why not?
